You hear about it everywhere these days. Blog this, blog that. Just what is it and why should you know? Well it is only one of the most interesting and effective means of communicating in today's modern age. Sorry I don't want to understate it.
Sure there are millions of folks putting out blogs [web logs, think of a diary of sorts but not private] that are full of crap and are not worth any time spent reading them[commonly referred to as splogs or spam blogs whose sole aim is to get you to click on their links to make them money or to provide links to other sites for search engine ranking]. However there are also thousands of creative people writing blogs every week that give out terrific information [like this one hopefully], insights, and creative works.
There are blogs by famous writers who share their words with us for free, there are blogs that explain how to do important things, and there are blogs that just allow you to create a community around your interests. Now that can be a good thing.
So when I first approached the idea of creating a blog I was at a loss about what to put in it. I was not one for baring my soul in a blog format. Just not my cup of tea. So I thought and thought until I realized there was an area that I cared about that I wanted others to care about and it so happens I could use some more education myself. So I started a blog about alternative energy and how to use it in one's personal life. It now gets lots of readers, tons of traffic and I feel like I am contributing in some fashion to the greater good. How can that be bad?
There are ways to create a blog that are super simple and require almost no technical knowledge such as Blogger.com. They host the blog and you create a blog using their templates and such so that you don't have to get into any sort of code if you don't want. Wordpress.com also allows you to create simple to build blogs hosted on their server. These are great ways to get rolling.
Then when you want to run the whole show and really get creative with the look and feel of your blog [not always necessary since the words are the most important thing] you can build a blog using a variety of available software such as Wordpress, Typepad, Pivot Log,and others. In these instances you host the blog on your own hosting account and you build it from the ground up. Nothing too hard here at least until you start to dig under the covers to customize. That sounds like working on cars doesn't it? Nice and easy just changing the oil and then when you want to soup it up things get a little more challenging.
Some people are making their good living simply writing about what they love several times a week and building a solid audience for their words. Sounds pretty cool to me.
